Thomas Rooney & Sons Ltd has been involved in numerous re-pointing projects in the past.
After long periods of time mortar used in traditionally built rubble stone buildings/walling may deteriorate and re-pointing becomes necessary.
Lime based mortars are very effective for masonry re-pointing work and lets the stone breathe. We recommend lime-based mortars for all re-pointing work.
Raking out is usually carried out before re-pointing work begins. It is necessary to remove any decayed mortar from the face of the walling and from around the stones. This is to provide a sound base for the replacement mortar. We always take into consideration the building process used initially as it is of the utmost importance that re-pointing is carried out in such a way that the visual appearance of the building/walling is not atltered. E.g. the lime mortar finish around the stones could be flush or recessed or it could be progressively smeared over the faces of stones until the final finish almost emerges as a full lime reader.
